Congratulations to Grade 12 student Anika White, who had the incredible opportunity to represent Canada in wrestling at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires Argentina this October! Anika began wrestling in Grade 7 after trying out for several other teams and immediately felt that she had found a community where she belonged. She continued wrestling in high school with the Thirsk wrestling team and went on to win the provincial championship in March of last year.
Former Olympian and teacher Christine Nordhagen has been a great inspiration for Anika, coaching her in both junior and senior high school, as well as weight lifting trainer Jen Swagger who has helped her to build strength and increase focus in her sport. Anika says that wrestling has given her the tools, experiences, and a sense of belonging that has helped her to deal more effectively with anxiety and to move forward in life.
We look forward to following Anika’s future as one of Canada’s most promising wrestlers!
